The Chobe River forms the Chobe National Parks’ northern boundary and serves as its lifeblood. Throughout the dry season, countless animals congregate along its banks in search of water, creating one of the highest concentrations of wildlife found anywhere in Africa. This remarkable abundance has earned Chobe an international reputation as one of the world’s premier wildlife photography destinations and leading reason as to why we have decided to include Chobe River into our itinerary.

Perhaps best known for its elephant population, Chobe is home to an estimated 50 – 120,000 elephants, one of the largest free-roaming elephant populations on Earth. Watching entire breeding herds gather at the river to drink, bathe and cross between islands is one of Africa’s most iconic safari experiences.

Yet Chobe is about far more than elephants.

Purpose-Built Photographic Boat Safaris

For many guests, the photographic boat cruises become the defining highlight of our Chobe River Photo Safari. 

Unlike traditional sightseeing cruises, Pangolin’s custom-built photographic boats have been designed specifically for wildlife photographers. Rotating chairs, specialised camera mounts and an exceptionally stable platform allow photographers to work comfortably with long telephoto lenses while capturing incredibly sharp images.

The low profile of the boats creates one of their greatest advantages.

Rather than looking down on wildlife from an elevated deck, photographers work almost at eye level with their subjects. This perspective creates intimate, natural-looking images and allows photographers to capture dramatic reflections, beautiful backgrounds and unique compositions impossible from larger vessels.

The Chobe River itself is alive with activity, from birdlife and reptiles to the giant mammals who can regularly be seen exploring the banks or even swimming across the waters.

Towering elephant bulls wade across channels while family herds encourage young calves through surprisingly deep water. Buffalo gather in large numbers along the shoreline, crocodiles silently patrol the riverbanks and pods of hippos dominate the quieter lagoons. Game Drives Through Chobe National Park

While the river provides unforgettable photographic opportunities, the game drives reveal another side of Chobe’s remarkable wilderness.

Venturing into the national park aboard open safari vehicles, you’ll explore a diverse landscape of riverine forest, open plains and woodland where predators roam freely and wildlife behaviour constantly unfolds before your eyes.

The Chobe Riverfront is particularly renowned for its high lion population, with prides frequently encountered resting beneath large trees during the heat of the day before becoming active in the cooler morning and evening hours. Rhulani Photo and Film is currently working on a photography and filming production in the Chobe National Park, capturing unique behavior and lion interactions – all made possible due to the large numbers and exquisite sightings the Chobe River and National Park offers.

Leopards, although naturally elusive, are regularly seen moving through the dense riverine vegetation or relaxing in the branches of towering trees. Patience and local knowledge often reward photographers with intimate encounters that become lifelong memories.

This safari has no set structure between game drives and boat cruises, and activities will be determined at Pangolin Hotel to accommodate sightings, Rhulani clients and Pangolin guests altogether. This can be greatly beneficial – if lions are feasting on a carcass and our group would prefer to photograph that as opposed to birdlife on the Chobe River, then we can tailor the safari to suite those requirements. However, throughout the duration of our stay, guests will enjoy both Chobe River boat cruises as well as Chobe National Park game drives – both of which provide excellent photography opportunities.
